    Applied Insight (AI) is seeking a Technical Writer/Editor/Formatter in Washington, D.C. The Technical Writer will provide the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Requirements Directorate support in organizing, writing, editing, and formatting requirements documents. These documents are prescribed by the DHS Joint Requirements Council, and must adhere to DHS instruction manuals and style guides.  They include Mission Needs Statements, Concepts of Operations, Operational Requirements Documents, Operational Evaluation Summaries, and other documents. 


    • Work within an interdisciplinary team to determine the needs of end users for systems acquisitions and other capability improvement programs
    • Proactively develop collaborative relationships within AMO, and with other agency partners
    • Facilitate communication among interdisciplinary teams comprised of aircraft and marine vessel subject matter experts to gain an understanding of the end-user’s point of view
    • Challenge subject matter experts to explain and articulate colloquial concepts and terminology in language that is clear to the un-initiated reader
    • Strengthen common themes that build and complement throughout sequentially complex documents
    • Analyze whether document content meets defined criteria standards as laid out in the instruction manuals
    • Create briefs, diagrams, graphs and charts that increase reader’s understanding
    • Artistically organize and present technical information
    • Effectively use standard document template styles
    • Proofread, edit, and format documents and briefs while maintaining a history of version control


    • Must successfully obtain a CBP BI Clearance and complete a CBP Background Investigation
    • Bachelor’s degree required, including coursework in writing
    • Experience in technical writing, editing, and production editing of technical documents, communicating technical information to various technical and non-technical audiences
    • Experience in requirements writing for Federal acquisition a plus
    • High proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) including full proficiency with MSWord style and formatting
    • Experience with interpretation, analysis, and application of Federal regulations and policy a plus
    • Candidates will be expected to furnish writing samples; prefer at least one to a structured content and format
    • Some travel required
